Black Heart’s Desire

Black Hearts Desire
Part of the Vampire Nights by My Pouty Lips series:
  • Black Heart’s Desire

She only wanted to be chosen.

Amy has everything a young woman of privilege is supposed to want: education, status, a respected family and a future waiting to be claimed.

What she does not have is desire directed at her.

Then she meets Ashtarte—beautiful, fearless and scandalously at ease with everything Amy has only watched from behind books. Their unlikely friendship becomes an exchange. Ashtarte teaches Amy to stop hiding from attention, while Amy opens doors into a respectable world Ashtarte has always been forced to observe from outside.

Each begins to envy what the other has.

Then Marcus arrives.

By the night of Amy’s twentieth-birthday masquerade, friendship, desire and ambition have become dangerously entangled. One devastating betrayal sends Amy fleeing into the night with a wish she never expects anyone to hear.

She wants one lover who will choose her above everyone else.

Someone has been listening.

He waits beyond the threshold in black, a red mask in his hand.

And all Amy has to do is invite him in.

The manuscript builds precisely around Amy and Ashtarte envying opposite aspects of each other’s lives, followed by Marcus, the masquerade betrayal and the red-masked vampire answering Amy’s wish.

From the Author

Black Heart’s Desire began with a question I kept returning to: how much of somebody else’s life do we envy simply because we cannot see its price?

Amy and Ashtarte appear to possess everything the other lacks. Amy has security, education and respectability, but longs to feel desired. Ashtarte can command attention almost effortlessly, yet lives without the safety Amy takes for granted.

Their friendship became the heart of the story.

The vampire grew naturally from the same idea. Amy does not wish for anything obviously monstrous. She wants something many people have wanted at least once—to be chosen completely, without competition or doubt.

The trouble begins when someone takes that wish literally.
