The premise and burglary-to-transformation progression reflect the finished manuscript, where Gary brings Woody home as protection, Woody saves Helena during a break-in, and Helena subsequently discovers the impossible truth behind him.

Doggie Style started with a deliberately wicked question: what if the guard dog your boyfriend brought home to protect you turned out to be much more than he appeared?

I wanted the answer to be funny, sexy, strange, and increasingly complicated. Helena already has a man she loves. Gary is not neglectful, boring, or waiting to be replaced. That is precisely what makes the temptation interesting.

Beneath the naughty title is a story about loneliness, appetite, secrecy, loyalty, and how quickly an impossible discovery can become a very human problem.
